My Approach to Therapy

While I consistently use evidence-based treatments, each client is unique and I tailor therapy to address his or her specific needs.  I use a person-centered approach and believe therapy is most productive in the context of a supportive, collaborative, and non-judgmental environment. I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches supported by research such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-based approaches, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Systemic Therapy among others.

I have specific expertise in treating alcohol and substance abuse problems and work with individuals who are at different stages of change and have different goals in terms of alcohol and substance use (reduced use, abstinence). I focus on relapse prevention and harm reduction approaches as well as address factors in a person’s life that contribute to substance use problems (e.g., stress, depression, etc.).
