Additional Experience

Over the past decade I have received multiple grant awards from the National Institutes of Health to support my research in the area of substance abuse prevention and cancer prevention among high risk populations.  My research has focused on working with individuals to change risky and potentially harmful behaviors using empirically validated approaches.  I have over 100 presentations and publications  on these topics in several peer-reviewed scientific journals including: Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology, and Psychology of Addictive Behaviors.

As part of my research and clinical work, I have provided training to physicians to improve communication with their patients and conducted specialized trainings for students and clinicians in treating substance use problems. I have also taught graduate level courses on counseling skills and provided clinical supervision to graduate students as part of their training.
